Guidelines to Selecting Keywords

Keywords help search engines locate specific information.  In this case, you want to include keywords about your products and services to increase your chances of visibility in the State's Certified Firm Inquiry Services search engine.  We've included general steps and tips to help you select keywords.

Step 1: Write a brief description of your business or refer to your marketing materials to identify the products and services you offer.

Step 2: From the description completed in Step 1, brainstorm a list of keywords.  Separately, list the product brands you sell or support.

Step 3: Think about the words or phrases people would use when searching for your firm's products and/or services. Write these down and underline single words that reflect your business offerings.

Step 4: Select or circle the words, product names, and/or services from the tasks completed above.  Rank the words by importance to your product and service offerings.

Step 5: Enter your keywords into the appropriate keyword fields in your Certified Firm Profile.

Note: Your Certified Firm Profile has a 250-character limit for each of the Service or Product areas.  This is approximately 25 words of 8-10 characters separated by spaces.  Construction firms are classified by the OSDS according to their Contractors State License Board (CSLB) contractor's license classification codes at the time of certification.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING AND MAINTAINING KEYWORDS

TIP#1
Update your profile with keywords right away!  Having no keywords, or inaccurate keywords obstructs customers from locating your firm.

TIP #2
Enter keywords that accurately describe the products and services your firm offers, including specialty products and/or brand names.

TIP #3
Do not list your company name as a keyword - it's already in the system!

TIP #4
List keywords only once.  Duplicates do not increase search results and it further limits your allocated 250-character keywords space.

TIP #5
If space permits, use common variations of misspelling in your keyword list if you believe this will occur as users enter words they want to search by.

TIP #6
Once your keywords are updated, do test searches to determine if your keyword selections are working.  Compare tests with other similar businesses and their keyword selections.

TIP #7
Update keywords as your business changes or if you identify better terms used by customers and competitors to help find your business.
